Soto Gebraak from Indonesia

Soto Gebraak
Soto Gebraak. A typical roadside eatery exterior plays camouflage to a white-tiled interior with neatly laid-out blond wood tables studded with bright-coloured food covers and plastic chairs. Cak Anton’s trademark thumping ( gebrak) of a bottle of sweet soy sauce is part of the enduring appeal of this place, whose Surabaya-style soto is actually quite dark and boring, with a high coconut cream content, chock-filled with garlic, turmeric and coriander, and overlaid with shredded beef and chicken. A liberal sprinkling of koya (a mix of prawn crackers and dried shrimp) gives it an edge. Like hundreds of diners everyday, you’ll do well to munch happily on the perkedel (beef and potato patties); empal (sweet fried beef) and paru goreng (fried ox lung) to the jolt of gebrak. Also at Taman Setiabudi, in front of SMA 3, Jakarta Selatan; Jl. Margonda Raya no. 572E, Depok; Jl. Kalibata Raya no. 4, Dewi Sartika, Jakarta Timur.
