Wan Toe

Wan Toe. You’d think that filling in the shoes of Super Kitchen would be a tall order, but not so for cornershop restaurant Wan Toe (an ingenious take on one, two that stops just short of the point of release), which seems so together, so of one piece, it might have preceded its predecessor. An evening feast on the spacious upper floor, unusual both in its range and its ability to delight, rendered the following, none disappointing: golden egg fried prawns, fried eggs in salted egg sauce; black pepper beef; chicken congee; Peking duck; deep-fried soft shell crabs topped with abon shavings; deep-fried chilli padi chicken; grilled squid in Malacca-sauce; bean curd with stuffed prawns; fried rice with XO sauce; seafood fried rice; fried rice with salted fish; duck noodles; noodles with steamed free-range chicken; sautéed bok choy with garlic; sautéed baby kalian with garlic; medicinal frog soup; a casserole of egg tofu and seafood; tofu and minced beef on a sizzling plate; homemade tofu doused in lingzi mushroom sauce; and oyster omelette.
Extra stars to the golden egg fried prawns, whose egg-fried-to-crisp reddish, sweetish crunch just refuses to die.
