Zhuma Japanese. Senayan city shoppers who want slightly out of the way scene-free sushi will do well to head for Zhuma. Behind the dark etched glass-façade is a skinny dining room with burnished copper walls and mood lighting. Of course it’s not just about sushi, though you’ll find some savoury ones here: the spicy crunchy rolls combine salmon bits, green chilli padi and tempura crumbs, while the soft shell crab and unagi rolls, ubiquitous as they are, are surprisingly pleasant. Less successful is the pear and green salad, which lacks the crunchiness of pear and the tang of seaweed – better to go with the house salad, which is a formulaic but flavoursome medley of crabstick, shredded iceberg lettuce tossed with creamy homemade dressing, tobiko and crispy salmon skin). The beef rolls stuffed with a slightly over salted sautéed shitake mushroom have a nice sweet butter-smooth taste to it.
Meanwhile, the highly touted house tempura is not quite the colourful handheld fans of crispy delights as per advertisement, but a rather average looking dish that is mercifully light on oil and pretence, and the red udon miso is an addictively spicy red-hued miso-based noodle soup with slices of Australian beef, mushroom, vegetables, tofu and jalapeno. Also try the house nabeyaki udon, replete with beef, shitake, crab sticks, vegetables, prawn tempura, to which some kind of house chilli sauce is added.
The pandanus infused lemonade — that’s pandan soda to you and me — doesn’t quite go with any dish on offer but is a fetching shade of green, if you’re into that sort of thing. Of the homemade ice cream, try the Malaga (which is just another term for rum and raisin), green tea or red bean.
